Kodiaks battle for first this weekend

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks basketball teams are looking to continue their winning ways after another successful weekend.

They’ve been able to spread out playing time a little bit this year, playing all 12 of the players they’ve dressed since the semester break, something assistant coach Deanna Dotts is excited about.

“To be able to play 12 people and to be able to consistently play nine or 10 is also really good because you never know who’s going to have a good night or who’s going to get hurt.”

The women have dominated over every team they’ve played this year winning by at least 44 points.

Dotts isn’t worried about her team get- ting complacent.

“It’s always a concern but it’s some- thing that you talk about from the begin- ning of the year, but when you have a team that returns this many starters and people o the bench as we did and we added a few key parts so you have that mindset that you just have to push all the time.”

As for the men, they’re weekend was successful, but hard fought.

They split the weekend 1-1 with the SAIT Trojans.

The first of the two games saw the return of Pierce Van Gaalen, who had suffered an ankle injury in a game on January 13th.

He says his ankle still isn’t at 100 per cent, but it’s getting better every day.

“The injury is still there, it’s only been a week but it’s feeling better every day, but it still hinders me during practice and I could definitely feel it during the games on the weekend.

Head coach Ryan Heggie says though guys stepped up, it’s good to have Van Gaalen back.

“Missing him for two games leaves a big hole for us. We had guys in the lineup that stepped up and did a good job, but if you saw our double overtime win on Friday, he was very instrumental in making defensive plays.”

The men have the potential to take rst place in the south and are now o to take on the conference-leading Red Deer Kings on the road this weekend.
