The Kodiak men’s volleyball team took a win and a loss in their last games against Medicine Hat on Thursday and Friday.

Friday, after losing the first set, they won three straight to claim the victory (17-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-17).

Thursday’s game could have gone either way; however, the Kodiaks lost the final set 16-14.

Jeff Marthaller received player of the game honours with 19 kills and seven digs.

“We had a couple chances to close it out,” Marthaller said. “We just gave up a few times in the first two sets there and we just battled hard in the last three. I felt like we deserved a win, but still, it just didn’t happen,”

Kodiak’s head coach Ian Bennett attributed the loss to a weak start.

“We dug ourselves a hole,” Bennett said on Thursday. “We gave them the first two (sets). Really, the game was pretty much decided in the first set, we were up 21-18, but we let them back. They won that and then we put ourselves in a tough spot against a good team.”

The match finished with the Kodiaks losing 3-1 in sets after bouncing back and winning two sets of their own (26-28, 18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 14-16).

The Kodiaks are on the road next weekend when they pay a visit to NAIT. They will be back at home the following weekend, hosting Keyano College at the Val Matteotti gym.
