Kodiak’s depending on defenders experience heading into end of season

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s soccer team is well into the 2018 season and going strong.

The team will turn to an older than average player to keep their momentum going into the end stretch of the season.

Dave Low, a 33-year-old first year student, joined the Kodiaks soccer team this year after talking to one of the coaches at a rec league game.

Low played soccer for about 25 years in England before moving to Lethbridge.

Kodiaks coach Sean Carey says Low is one of the central players this season.

“He’s stepped up huge for us, he’s a central defender. His experience is huge for us in the back, he talks to the young guys all the time, which is very important in this kind of league.”

Low is currently taking online courses toward the Child and Youth Care diploma, as well as working full time. Not all of his qualifications transferred when he moved from the UK six years ago.

He kept his passion for soccer alive playing is the Alberta Major Soccer League after moving to Lethbridge, but he’s excited to be back on the college field.

“I was a little bit worried, I wasn’t sure with the age gap of having 15 years on some of these guys what it would be like. It’s a nice change, a good competitive level,” Low said.

The goal for the team this year was to put themselves in good standings heading into provincials. Based on the performance of the team so far, Carey says they have a good chance of making it. Currently their record is 5-3-1.

Low and the rest of the Kodiaks will be back in action this weekend at home facing off against Red Deer College.

Hello! I’m Dara Kendell, I’m from the tiny, dinosaur infested town of Drumheller. I really love alternative music, photography, travelling, and my cat Ruby. I have an ever-growing collection of tattoos and would pretty much always rather be at a concert. I moved to Lethbridge in 2017 to take the Digital Communications and Media program. It’s pretty rad.
