Kodiaks dive into new season

The Kodiaks women’s volleyball team prepares to set up its new season.

The Kodiaks are looking to bounce back after a tough season. The team is coming off of a four win and 20 loss  record last year.

Jamie Brown, third year player, thinks the team has a chance to do well this year.

“I am expecting us to have a really good year actually. We are really young, so I think the energy will be high every game. Everyone is excited to be here, so I think it will be really awesome and beneficial for us this season,” said Brown.

The setter would love to get back into the ACAC championships this season as she made it in her first year, saying the experience was incredible.  She believes the team has a good group of returning players that can bring leadership for the young players.

The championships will be hosted by Lethbridge College on Feb. 27-29, 2020. Anna Schwark, head coach of the team knows the importance of playing in front of a home crowd.

“To be here and be home, that would be really exciting. It would be an awesome way to give back to the fans that come every single weekend. We have such a good fan base and it would be really nice to give them one last show, or a couple more shows at the end of the season,” said Schwark.

The head coach believes each player will have to work extremely hard and give 100 per cent effort this season if they want a chance to play at the ACAC championships.  The team has a lot of inexperienced players as seven of their 17 players are playing their first year for the Kodiaks.

The coach says one thing the team wants to focus on is staying optimistic and positive throughout the season. She thinks confidence was the biggest issue last year and she wants to build that confidence back up and build a new culture.

The Kodiaks will start the season with a double header against the SAIT Trojans  in  Lethbridge for the first game on Oct.18. The teams will head to  Calgary for a re-match the following day. For more information about Kodiaks players and upcoming schedules, visit gokodiaks.ca
