The Lethbridge College cross-country Kodiaks ran to another stellar finish this past weekend in Camrose at the CCAA national championships.
In what head coach Bertil Johansson called the Kodiaks’ strongest national competition to date, the men’s team took first place while the women placed second.
Nobody was surprised when undefeated Willy Kimosop took the gold medal in the men’s 8 km race, finishing over a minute ahead of second place at 25:53.
The Kodiaks’ Ed Kangogo won silver at 26:15, Peter Kayla (6th, 27:11), Moses Kipkosgei (14th, 28:14) and Travis Epp (16th, 28:23).
Out of 14 teams from across Canada, the Kodiaks men ranked first place with 23 points. It was a dominating performance considering the second place team massed 48 points.
Six Kodiak men’s runners were named to the all-conference team, something comparable to an all-star team. Kimosop, Kangogo, Kayla, Kipkosgei, Epp and Christian Chesire filled out six of the seven spots.
In the women’s 5 km race, Kodiaks rookie, Purity Kandie finished her strong season, taking the bronze medal at 25:53. Gladys Kochei was the next best Kodiak finishing in 7th at 19:53. Winnie Cheptogok finished 18thth (21:48). (21:21) and Florence Kangogo in 26
Overall, the Kodiaks women finished second place in the team standing, with 42 point, only six points away from first.
Kandie, Kochei and Cheptogok were all named to the women’s all-conference team after the race.
In the ACAC conference, the Kodiaks men and women both finished in first place for the regular season, while Kimosop and his cousin Kandie finished at the top of the individual ranks.
