The Lethbridge College Kodiak soccer teams fought hard this weekend with both squads recording a loss and a win.
On Saturday, the women’s team lost 4-3 and the men lost 3-1, against the SAIT Trojans. However both teams did win on Sunday’s games against the Olds Broncos with the men winning 4-3 and the women winning 2-1.
On Saturday, the women’s team held their own. The score at the first half was tied at two with goals scored by midfielders Taylor Thygesen and Hayley Hoop.
The Trojans caught up in the second half, but did not go unanswered. At the last second of the game, midfielder Michelle Swampy scored a final goal for the Kodiaks.
Unfortunately the men’s game against the Trojans was not as close as the women’s. The score against the Kodiaks was already 2 – 0 in the first six minutes.
Dario Passquotti, Kodiaks guard, was the only player able to put a point on the board during the second half.
Head coach Joe Mauro says the men’s loss can be blamed on “stupid mistakes,” leading to the very quick setback for the Kodiaks.
Mauro added that the players’ lack of focus at the beginning of each game was the reason for their frustrating six-game losing streak.
The men’s ACAC player of the game was awarded to striker and midfielder Matthew Thompson for the Kodiaks and Trojan’s fullback Dylan Portillo.
For the women’s game the award was given to Kodiak’s defense Aimee Santangelo and Trojan’s fullback Molli Macaulay.
Mike Racz, Kodiak women’s head coach, was proud of his girls.
“They played with their hearts and that’s all we can ask of them”, he said, smiling.
Racz added this game was a lot closer to their skill level than their last one, referring to the game against Red Deer that ended in a 6 – 0 loss.
The Kodiaks next opportunity to get out of the gutter comes on Saturday, Oct. 13 against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
Results for that game can be found in our Endeavour Online issue.
