The Kodiaks Men’s basketball team has been on a tear to start the season. It hasn’t dropped a single game since the beginning of the season. This strong start to the season has resulted in recognition the Kodiaks have never achieved before.
“Today we just got ranked number one in Canada. So that’s been something that since I have been here, has never happened. “
This season for the Kodiaks’ Men’s Basketball team couldn’t have gone any better with the team sporting an undefeated record of 11-0.
It’s the first time the team has been ranked higher than number two, nationally, and Coach Ryan Heggie says the team has had significant contributions from everyone. He adds it speaks volumes about the team’s talent and depth.
“We share the basketball. We are a pretty unselfish team. We lead all of Alberta in assists per game and it helps us to score a lot of points.”
The Kodiaks currently sit third in the league for points scored, as well as allowing the third-fewest points against. It’s another sign of the balance the Kodiaks display.
Fourth-year player Orin Porter Jr. is an integral part of the team’s offense, averaging 19 points, five rebounds, and four assists per game. He says the team believes it can go beyond an ACAC championship this year.
“We are going to keep riding it out, try and get to… well, no. First, it is ACAC’s, and then it’s the nationals. I’m stoked.”
Porter Jr says in order to keep this streak alive, the Kodiaks’ work ethic needs to remain high and be prepared to handle opposing teams best every game.
The men’s basketball team has a doubleheader this weekend with Ambrose University. The ACAC championships will be held at Augustana University in March. The two games this weekend will be a home and home series. Ambrose currently sports a 5-4 record.
