Depending on how you look at things, the glass may be half-full for the Kodiaks women’s basketball team, as they were able to combat a Friday night loss against Grand Prairie with a Saturday night win against NAIT.
A late-game stumble was the reason for the Kodiaks 73-46 loss against Grande Prairie as they only muster seven points in the final quarter.
Rebounding also proved to be a sore-spot as the Kodiaks were out-rebounded 46-24.
It wasn’t all bad news though as the Kodiaks’ Natalie Johnson was able to put up a double-double in the loss with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The Kodiaks started the season with a five-game losing streak but were able to snap that on Saturday night with a 55-46 win over NAIT.
With a seven-point fourth quarter showing still fresh in their minds, the team was able to quadruple that total on Saturday night, putting up 28 points in the final stanza to get the win.
Makenzie Meeks and Savana Gines were able to make good on a couple of late-game three-pointers to seal the victory down the stretch.
Meeks had a strong game for the Kodiaks, putting up a season-high 16 points in the win and capturing player honours for the team.
For NAIT, it was forward Dale-Marie Cumberbatch picking up player honours.
The women sit in a tie for fifth spot in the ACAC South Division with Briercrest.
On the men’s side of things, the Kodiaks continue to pick up wins, posting a 110-83 victory over Grande Prairie on Friday and a 94-77 win over NAIT on Saturday.
Offence continues to be a strength for the Kodiaks as they sit atop all of the ACAC in scoring and that is exactly what the team used to get both victories.
Morgan Duce and Logan Reiter lead the way against Grande Prairie scoring 28 and 26 points respectively while Dom Coward chipped in on the glass with 11 rebounds.
On Saturday night, it was a couple of standout performances that helped guide the Kodiaks to their straight win.
Duce had a huge game, putting up 37 points and Coward racked up 26 rebounds to go along with 24 points.
Game honours went to Duce from the Kodiaks and Shane Reece for NAIT.
The Kodiaks hit the road for their next four games and will return home to host Lakeland College on Jan. 14.
