LC student appears on Wipeout Canada

The premier of Wipeout Canada is on April 3 and criminal justice student Matthew Hartery will be appearing on the show.

“I was watching the American Wipeout one day with my girlfriend and thought ‘I could totally do this, no problem’ and then as the commercials came on it said they were accepting applications for Wipeout Canada,” said Hartery.

Hartery went through the 12-page application form and sent it on June 28 along with a video he had to produce.

"On July 17, the Wipeout people called me and said I was getting a callback. I was not on the show yet but I had made the top 1,000 people out of all the applicants."

Hartery needed to create another video and send it in to Wipeout, but in this video he needed to have more information about himself.

"On August 18 I got the call I had been waiting for, the Wipeout people called and said I would be leaving Saskatoon to fly to Buenos Aires, Argentina to participate in Season One of Wipeout Canada.

Hartery left on Oct. 15 and was there until Oct. 22. He says on TV the obstacles look fairly easy, but when he was actually doing it, they were difficult.

"The set looked very impressive, though, and when we were there we were treated like rock stars," said Hartery.

"It was a really cool experience and I am still amazed I even got to go."

Hartery says there were 260 people selected out of almost 50,000 applicants.

"The only reason why it is in Buenos Aires is because the course is there. The course costs one million to build so people from all over the world go there to do Wipeout. There is one other course in California where the Americans do their Wipeout but that is it," said Hartery.

He says he never got injured during his time on Wipeout, but one contestant ripped his achilles tendon in the Wipeout zone and another person separated their shoulder in the sweeper round.

"My name on the show is TuxSpeedo and I am wearing a Speedo with a tux print on the front," said Hartery.
