Dean and Margaret Wenzel, owners of the Kona-Ice Snow Cone Truck, hand out free snowcones to Lethbridge College students just outside of centre core on Wednesday, Sept. 11. The Wenzel’s offered free snowcones because they wanted to attract customers for when they make an appearance at CouleeFest on Saturday, Sept. 14.
With the beginning of the school year, the plans and events put on by the Lethbridge College Students’ Association commence with anticipation from the student body and faculty.
There are events for all students of diverse backgrounds, ranging from sexy bingo to goat yoga.
However, for Tanner Marcer, events and communications coordinator for the LCSA, he encourages students to focus on and participate in the upcoming student elections.
“Selfishly, I would love students to anticipate student elections. The opportunity to be a part of the LCSA is potentially the most beneficial for anybody. Only a small group of students take full advantage of that experience and I really wish that more students would attempt to join the LCSA. They have everything to gain from it,” said Marcer.
Student elections closed last Friday, Sept. 13.
The events put on throughout the semester such as Wellness Wednesdays, which is a healthy breakfast served at centre core from 9 a.m. until food runs out, for the entirety of the school year.
Other activities include Thirsty Thursdays, where alcoholic drinks are $4 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
All of these activities are put on for the students to help alleviate any stresses in their personal lives. Marcer believes these events are essential for balance and a healthy mindset.
“There is three P’s of college: persistence, patience and partying. You got to work hard and continue to work hard, because change doesn’t happen overnight. The P for partying is more for balance more than anything. You can only sit and look at your textbooks for so long. You need to get out, take a break and take advantage of your experience here at the college,” said Marcer.
Intramurals and recreational activities are also offered throughout the semester, starting up near the end of September. Co-ed volleyball, co-ed floor hockey and many other recreational activities will be offered.
J.P. Gentile, Campus Recreation Coordinator, highlights the annual slo-pitch tournament as the big main event of September that allows the students to have a good time before getting on the school grind.
“Everyone has a good time; it’s fun. We go out for some beverages and pizza after. Everyone kind of buckles down and starts their semester,” said Gentile.
The slo-pitch tournament is happening on Sept. 19 and all students are welcome to sign-up and participate in the fun event.
To sign-up for any of the LSCA’s events, head to its office, located near centre core in CE1350.
