Lethbridge charity brews up funds in support of multiple sclerosis research

Lethbridge residents gathered at the Royal Canadian Legion last Friday night to taste beer samples from local breweries in support of multiple sclerosis.

The Art of Craft Beer event was hosted by the MS Society of Lethbridge on Nov. 2. A large portion of funds raised at the event went to programs and services in Lethbridge, with the remaining funds going to the MS Society of Canada because they fund disease-modifying therapies and attempt to find a cure for MS.

According to mssociety.ca, MS is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. The disease attacks the myelin, which is the protective covering of the nerves, causing inflammation which damages the protective covering. The myelin is necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses through nerve fibres.

“MS affects every person diagnosed differently. The symptoms vary and can change over time. They can often include numbness, fatigue, varying pain, balance issues and much more. Some people use a cane to combat these symptoms, while others require a wheelchair or long-term care for their needs,” said Darlene Kolesar, an MS Society council member that was diagnosed with MS 16 years ago.

The MS Society council member said the hardest part about being diagnosed with MS is attempting to balance work and the hobbies and activities she enjoys but can no longer do anymore due to the disease.

Kolesar said she has turned to friends and family to combat the loss of activities she enjoys and can no longer do.

The Art of Craft Beer event showcased 15 different beer and brewery vendors from around Alberta, with each company showcasing their favourite beers.

Attendees each received a free beer sampling mug. A raffle and silent auction were also opportunities for attendees to contribute to the MS Society. Most notable items available at the silent auction included a Calgary Flames memorabilia basket, two ski lift passes, a James Taylor autographed guitar and six Lethbridge Hurricanes ticket vouchers.

“It was just a fun night to come out and enjoy some craft beer with your friends and also support a great cause,” said Kendra Bloomberg, the MS Society events and volunteer coordinator for the fifth annual event.

Bloomberg added that citizens of Lethbridge can expect the event to return for years to come.

The next event being hosted by the MS Society will be the annual “Walk for MS” which takes place in April 2020.
