Lethbridge College Cheer Team looks forward to the future

Now that Lethbridge College’s new hip-hop cheer dance team has made its anticipated debut, the future possibilities for them are exciting.

Founder and student Aimee Pacquiao says she wanted to see something different during school pep rallies and this was her main motivation to come up with her own hip hop cheer team.
“I had to talk to the athletic co-ordinator to get it approved and he said it was a good idea so we went from there,” she says.
“Since then we’ve held try-outs and we’ve been practising ever since.”
The team made its debut at the Kodiaks basketball game during halftime on Jan. 14 and members put a lot of work into learning just one routine.
“We usually practise twice a week but the week before the first game we prasticed everyday because it was so short notice.”
Pacquiano says she will be doing the same again next year and hopes it will continue after she is done at the college.
“I hope some girls stay even though I know some will be leaving to go to university.”
Pacquiano also says the team is very hard working and dedicated.
Teammate Darsha Rewega says she tried out because she was ready to do something different.
“I wanted to do something to stay fit and really just try something new,” she says.
“It’s a lot of fun and the whole team really contributes to making and perfecting the routines.”
Pacquiano and her teammates have high hopes as to where they could take the team in the next couple of years but they’re in no rush.
“For now we’re only playing at halftime games. Next year we hope to make it a real team in the school and maybe go to competitions but for now we’re starting off slowly.”
Both Pacquiano and Rewega are encouraging students to come watch and help cheer on the sports teams.
“Come out and watch the Kodiak games and help us cheer and motivate our home team Kodiaks,” says Rewega.
