After a strong preseason performance, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s volleyball team is set to begin their regular season.
A 22-2 regular season record last year and the fact an ACAC provincial tournament is being held at Lethbridge College, has head coach Greg Gibos and his team preparing for a good season.
The Kodiaks have a few new faces on the team this year. As a result, Coach Gibos says one of the challenges the team faces this year is finding a new identity.
“We returned a lot of players, but we’re also kind of a new group, so for us it’s working out a lot of new kinks, kind of a new identity,” said Coach Gibos, after being asked about the team’s challenges this year.
“We are returning five of seven starters, but I think the team’s got a totally different make up this year,” said Gibos.
The Kodiaks have just finished their preseason, winning 11 of their 15 matches. Tony Albizzati, a fourth-year player on the team, said that the team had high expectations for the year, even after losing a few key players.
“We lost two pretty key players; they were both captains from last year and their passing was phenomenal,” said Albizzati.
“Coming off a great season last year, we have high expectations for ourselves. We’re hosting provincials as well, so we want to have a good regular season and just want to be better than last year, which will be a tough accomplishment,” he added.
The Kodiaks will begin their regular season against the SAIT Trojans on Friday, Oct. 18. The Kodiaks did not play the Trojans during the preseason, but after a strong 4-0 match against College of the Rockies, the Kodiaks look to start the season strong.
