The College passed tighter restrictions earlier this semester, with everyone entering campus required to have proof of vaccination, have a medical exemption, and provide a negative PCR or rapid test taken within 72 hours of being in campus.

The new LC Alert app was specifically designed to make it easier for the College to track students, staff, and visitors’ vaccination status. However, the app also contains numerous functions including support resources, bomb threats, fire safety, medical emergency, and many more.

Second year Nursing Student, Zelwyn Hugo believes the app is a valuable creation by the college for its ability to alert everyone on campus in any event of emergencies.

“I’ve had the LC Alert app even before the college’s mandate to download it, in case of emergencies. It is definitely a positive change in the college as it provides campus information, support resources, and emergency procedures.”

Hugo strongly agrees with the college’s decision to require everyone to show proof of vaccination or negative tests when coming to campus, but he also feels mandatory vaccinations are wrong, as it robs people of their right to practise their beliefs and values.

“Some students may have been forced to get vaccinated just to get their education and others even had to withdraw all together,” says Hugo.

First year Nursing Student, Alexis Nieto says although showing vaccine proof upon entering the building every single time can be a hassle, she understands the situation and its importance.

“I think that implementing a mandatory vaccination policy is important to help decrease the spread of COVID in our campus and community. The vaccine card is a way to ensure that students, staff, and anyone else setting foot on campus are following the new regulations,” explains Nieto.

Along with vaccination cards, Nieto also believes the LC alert app is a great way for the college to make sure everyone is following the set rules.

“I think the LC Alert app is extremely beneficial, and I do believe that a certain percentage of the population must be immunized in order to protect the community, and I think the app and vaccine cards will help bring us one step closer to ending the pandemic,” says Nieto

Despite a few differences of thoughts regarding the College’s new sets of regulations, both Hugo and Nieto feels the app is a great tool to ensure the safety and protection of everyone in the college.

The LC alert app is currently available for free in the app store for iPhone, iPad, and Android.
