Sit, stay.
Dog lovers from across Alberta and Canada came together this weekend to enjoy the All Breed Dog Shows and Obedience/Rally Trials. The Lethbridge & District Kennel Club hosted the 51st annual event at Exhibition Park.
This year featured a new class, the Baby Puppy Class.
“Puppies three to six months old compete, not for points, but just to give them experience in the ring,” explained Publicity chair Evelyn Sera.
Many of the contestants from Alberta competed in this weekend’s event, while competitors in Lethbridge helped behind the scenes.
“Mostly Albertans are competing. Because it’s a Lethbridge show, most of our members aren’t showing, they’re working the dog show. We go to their show, they work, they come to our show, we work,” said President of the Lethbridge and District Kennel Club Bill Nykiel.
The results of the show go to the standings where all points given by judges to the competitors are tallied. At the end of the season, the dog with the most points wins that category, region and nationally.
A three-year-old male Standard Poodle, Graydon, won best in show at the event every day this weekend and continues to be the top dog in the national confirmation standings according to canuckdogs.com.
Overall the show was a success, as over 400 dogs and owners competed in this year’s events, and competitors, dogs and humans alike, had a good time.
“It’s good, Lethbridge always puts on a good clean show,” said competitor Lora Bruder, whose companion, a Welsh Cardigan Corgi named Daisy May, has won the herding nationals twice.
The Kennel Club also gave out pamphlets and information for any of those who are interested in adopting a dog or even competing in Dog Shows. For those that are interested in adopting, competing, or even registering for the club, visit idkca.net.
