The Kodiaks women’s basketball team gets to play against Canada’s best in the Canadian College Athletics Association Championship. Lethbridge College hosts the event, which runs from Mar. 15-17. They could find themselves battling the ACAC champs, the Grant MacEwan Griffins, again.
The Kodiaks defeated the SAIT Trojans 68-60 in Edmonton on Saturday to end up in third place in the ACAC standings.
The bronze gets the Kodiaks back into the top teams in the ACAC. They missed it last year, after getting silver for the 2009-10 year.
The Kodiaks maintained the lead every quarter on the Trojans, getting up by nine points by the end of the third. Third-year guard Lisa Ivanics led the Kodiaks with 20 points. The team was nearly 40 per cent from the floor, and over 15 per cent from beyond the 3-point line.
The Kodiaks played the Griffins in last Friday’s semi-final, losing 68-59 to the still undefeated team. The Griffins have a record of 24-0 this year, and this exceptional run has given the team their first ACAC women’s basketball title. They are also ranked first in Canada, according to the CCAA.
The Kodiaks journey to the ACAC Championship involved a 2-1 series triumph over Augustana in a qualifier held Feb. 23-25. The team finished the regular season in second place in the ACAC south.
