Library takes the L.E.E.D in Green

Featuring an ecological and innovative design the new west side library leads as one of the greenest examples of architecture in Lethbridge. The Crossings Branch Library, which opened August 30 is freeing more than eager readers’ minds, but is also freeing the environment of harmful emissions.

The library hones a unique technological feel, with high ceilings surrounding its readers in glass windows, the top most ones opening automatically to form the library’s ventilation system. This magical work is performed thanks to temperature sensors, which sense when the building needs some fresh air.
However, these windows are not the only form of technology keeping this library green. Yet another initiative would be the radiant heating system which is hot water tanks flowing heated water through pipes under the library floor.
There are also bike racks placed outside in an attempt to promote an alternative and cleaner form of transport.
Not only will the environment see positive change, the community and the library can see it as well. With the library applying for L.E.E.D, which is Leadership Excellence in Environmental Design, the library can collect points for each specific element of an eco-friendly design. Depending on how many points are gathered the library will be higher up in regards to eco friendly construction.
The Crossings Branch Library caters to a wide variety of people within Lethbridge and out.
“Everybody is welcome here and we mean everybody,” says the coordinator of branch services Elisabeth Hegerat.
There is a massive collection of DVDs as well as reading materials that the general public can enjoy. With the library focusing on popular reads, learning, and general information, it’s hard not to have everyone coming to delve into the endless material available.
“We are new and exciting, but we are still part of the familiar Lethbridge Public Library,” stated Hegerat, “You can also return the books at either of our locations, including the Book Mobile.”
Both libraries, which are specified under the same Alberta Library System, work together to bring the community as many advantageous programs possible to benefit the public.
With programs and seminars well on their way such as the Pre School Story Time program starting up after Thanksgiving, the Crossings Branch Library expects things will not be slowing down, but merely becoming busier by the day.
