Nothing in life is free. College students know this and sometimes their diet reflects this.
The College Drive Community Church understands this dilemma. They give students the opportunity to have a wholesome and healthy meal for only $2, called The Gulp.
Sharmaine Reimer has been scooping spaghetti for seven of the nine years that the church has been helping feed starving students.
“Being in a church we would first of all, like to serve students, knowing it is expensive to eat, this is only $2 so it kind of helps them with their budget,” said Reimer.
This selfless act every Wednesday helps many students. Some, who do not call Lethbridge home, might not have the funds or ability to create a meal like the one provided by the church and its members.
“We also would like the students to enter the church. Because church is about God and we like to be there for people and talk about God if they have questions or anything,” said Reimer.
Reimer feels that the students are very appreciative of the meal and opportunity to talk.
“They love it they look forward to Wednesday, saying ‘we waited all week for this,’” said Reimer.
Pat Brooks has been involved with the Gulp for three years and she loves to see the smiles on the student’s faces.
“I love hearing them say, ‘this is the best meal I have had all week,’” said Brooks.
The College Drive Community Church puts on the Gulp every Wednesday, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. They encourage students to come by have an affordable and filling meal, and are open to questions about faith or god as they are always there to listen, according to Reimer.
