Local donations helping out Haiti relief

With all of the news, images and reports of the devastation occurring in Haiti, much of the world has come together in order to provide any assistance possible. However, local citizens may wonder what they’re able to do to ease the suffering of those affected by the destructive earthquake.

The Canadian Red Cross has long been dedicated to providing information, aid and fundraising for those affected by war, trauma, and distress – Haiti is no different. They have opened their doors in order to provide an outlet for members of the community looking to donate to the Haiti relief fund.

“In Canada, we have raised $56 million for the earthquake support,” said Natasha Fairweather, a representative of the Red Cross in Lethbridge. However, she hopes that more can be collected. “$105 million will support 300 000 Haitians for three years. There are long-term implications.”

Approximately 20 local businesses have set up fundraisers which are all given over to the Red Cross and donated directly to the Haiti crisis.

“The outpour from the community has been outstanding,” adds Fairweather.

Though many may have the desire to donate, finances may be of concern. However, hefty donations, while appreciated, are not necessarily needed by everyone.

“Small donations make up a huge portion of our fundraising.”

In fact, the Red Cross is allowing people to donate money through their cell phones. Citizens simply need to text ‘redcross’ to the number ‘30333’ and an automatic $5 will be donated on their behalf to the Haiti relief fund, and the charge will appear on their next phone bill.

Additional community efforts on behalf of the Red Cross include Gas King, who will be donating a portion of every litre of gas sold to Haiti relief and the Duke of Wellington pub which will be hosting a pancake breakfast on January 20,  with the proceeds will go to the Red Cross.
