Men’s volleyball team makes play for provincials

The Kodiak men’s volleyball team is hoping to finish the season strong this semester with new goals, plans and a lot of team work.

Finishing the season last year in second place and being undefeated for the last 10 games, the team is only one win away from securing themselves a spot in this year’s volleyball provincials.

Greg Gibos, the teams Head Coach said the same mindset and drive the team relied on last year will hopefully prevail and drive it to be successful getting to, and performing at provincials.

“Last year was great, but I think we improve each day that we practice, and we have a really good hunger to get better. For us that’s been the biggest thing, that every day you’re in this gym, is a day you want to get better.”

This weekend the Kodiaks will play the Calgary SAIT Trojans twice, who are once again a nationally recognized team in the ACAC league.

The Trojans beat out the Kodiaks for first place in the ACAC Championships last year, however the last time the two teams played, the Kodiaks beat the Trojans 3-0 in a home game for the Trojans.

The game is expected to be a very competitive, physical match as both teams are battling for their top spots at provincials.

Michael Svab, second-year middle blocker said the team has what it takes to beat SAIT and are ready to do what it takes to bring home the hardware.

“Matching up with them specifically is really important for us and just playing our game really well. We pride ourselves in being really strappy on defence and that being one of our strong suits, we’d really like to improve on that.”

The men’s volleyball games will take place this weekend with a home and home series split between Lethbridge and Calgary and will determine the future of the season for the Kodiaks.
