There are few things as iconically symbolic of the holidays as the ugly Christmas sweater. Last week the Helen Schuler Nature centre held its first annual “Make your own ugly Christmas sweater” event over two days from November 5-6.
“I think it provides an opportunity for people to come together and have a fun event where they make their own sweaters, and it’s preparations for the holidays.” Is how Sara Turkeli, a program leader at the nature centre, and organizer of the “make your own ugly Christmas sweater” event felt. “And at the same time they’re realizing hey I have a sweater at home, I have a t-shirt at home, and I can make Christmas crafts!“
The sold-out event drew crowds of all sizes ranging from old fiends to new families, all interested in the fun of intentionally cheesy holiday apparel. “I always go to the parties and I never have the appropriate dress. And there’s always people who upstage me so I’m looking forward to this Christmas season with my overly decorated sweater with lots of colour and sparkles and all that fun stuff” That’s how Kate Miller a first time ugly sweater wearer, feels about the event.
The “Make your own ugly Christmas sweater” event was only the beginning of the Helen Schuler Nature Centres holiday themed events. The centre has several more fun nights planned including Christmas craft making, and present wrapping. For more information, call the Nature Centre at 403-320-3064.
