On Saturday night thousands of runners and hundreds of spectators gathered in downtown Lethbridge for the Runner’s Soul 25th annual Moonlight Run.
The total number of people the running course can accommodate is 2,500 and it filled up early for the second year in a row. Participants met at the starting point of the race, behind the courthouse where the streets were blocked off.
There were two options of courses for the runners to choose from, with total distances of six or 10 kilometres. The route took runners down into the coulees, past Indian Battle Park and back up to the starting point.
Lethbridge resident Megan Palloway, 23, ran the six-kilometre race for the fourth time. Palloway says she likes the Moonlight Run because of the fun atmosphere created by the other runners, including her running companion Brian Harrison, who ran the race wearing a gorilla costume.
“Looking around (the starting point), there’s tons of people. It’s not too competitive, everyone’s here for a good time,” says Palloway.
Palloway says that she also likes how the money raised by the run’s entry fees goes to support the coulee cleanup, which she feels is a good cause.
People from the ages of two to 85 participated in the run. Some of the participants are serious runners, while others chose to take it slow and enjoy the nice weather.
Palloway says that while she doesn’t consider herself to be a serious runner, she does enjoy running and other fitness activities as part of a healthy lifestyle.
“I’m into heavier lifting and I’m doing a couple triathlons this year and some obstacle races as well. It’s a summer hobby.”
Prizes of $100, $200 and $300 were given out for the top three female and male runners in each race.
The top female in the 10k race was Leslee Hilkewich with a time of 45:14.75, followed by Sandra Asuchak and Tracey Roemmele. The top female in the 6k race was Elani Bykowski with a time of 24:32.45, followed by Adriene Gomes and Shondi Bassett.
The top male in the 10k race was Kip Kangogo with a time of 31:01.25, followed by Peter Kalya and Shane Andersen. The top male in the 6k race was Willy Kimosop with a time of 19:17.00, followed by Travis Cummings and Ed Kangogo.
The next Moonlight Run is scheduled for March 23, 2013.
