Students are expected to spend a large amount of money on textbooks for their classes and there hasn’t really been any other option, until now.
Ebooks are essentially a textbook in a digital format that can be read on a laptop, iPhone and other electronic devices. This is an alternate reading choice for students and will be easy on the budget and more
convenient.
Vice President Academic and Chief Learning Officer Peter Leclaire says there are a lot of benefits to the idea but the biggest positive would be the decrease in the cost for students requiring large expensive textbooks.
“The biggest benefit to students would be the cost reduction.”
Leclaire also told media the idea is also to become “greener” and more environmentally friendly saving money on paper.
Leclaire says the idea is only being considered at this point and he is looking to explore other options.
“We want to investigate the value of the idea for students. It may cost a lot less, but then students would be required to provide themselves with a laptop or some type of computing device which makes the cost increase once again. Student loans don’t cover laptops at this time which is our biggest challenge.”
Leclaire also says he wants to research this more, and get more information before anything is set.
The option for a technologically advanced learning system is there, but not all of the course textbooks are currently available through Ebooks. Therefore it is not beneficial to all students, only those involved in specific programs at the college.
If some instructors decide to go through with this then students could expect to see Ebooks as early as next year.
