Lethbridge College has made a change to their smoking policy that states smokers must find designated smoking areas before being able to light up or vape.
Current student, Shelby Volke, said it’s good for the college but he’s not too happy about it.
“Lots of people are still going to smoke in the same place,” said Volke.
One student who wished to remain anonymous said the designated areas would be a really far walk, therefore not likely to be used. Another who also wanted to remain anonymous said “I wouldn’t have put it (a designated smoking area) right next to sewer drain, that was kind of dumb.”
This isn’t the first time students have been vocal about the smoking policies adapted by the college.
In a time when smoking was allowed in and around Lethbridge College, non-smokers still tried to take a stand against having smoke blown in their face during classes.
“They used to have small gold foil ashtrays, smokers would use them, then fold them in half and throw them away,” says Lethbridge College Alumni Derek Bly.
In 1977 Bly wrote a letter that was published in this very paper, called Smokers violate the rights of non-smokers, the debate of whose rights were more important. In the article he stated that he didn’t care if you destroyed your health, but you shouldn’t risk the health of others in the process.
