The Olympic torch may have left Lethbridge, but the spirit, national pride and inspiration it brought to southern Alberta, still lingers.
Southern Albertans seemed to have put aside their cultural differences, problems and stresses last weekend to enjoy this momentous occasion. Thousands of people waited collectively in anticipation with child-like excitement to see this worldwide-coveted treasure pass by, in what was Day 80 of the Olympic torch journey.
Whether it was at a torch transfer point or the final cauldron lighting at Henderson Lake Park, people seemed full of Canadian patriotism. The scene for the final torch cauldron lighting was one that resembled an outdoor music concert. The area was decked with lights and activities, including a giant stage that was surrounded by joyous Canadians in support of the torch lighting celebration.
Then there was the scene of the four CP rail workers, who were dressed in traditional 1910 rail gear bringing the torch across the High Level Bridge, singing O Canada. This added a special element to the event – it was the first time the Olympic torch had ever crossed a bridge.
Then there were all the people who came out in support. The noise and connections they were making with one another at each transfer point truly showed this was something bigger than them.
Our Endeavour staff feels this once-in-a-lifetime event is probably one of the most beneficial and exciting ones they have ever witnessed or been involved with from this region.
The Olympic torch produced a lot of hope in southern Albertans during its period here, especially at a time that has been noted as one of the most depressing times of the year.
One of the Lethbridge torchbearers even told us he believes the spirit still exists inside his torch.
It was just a nice, sharing event that brought out the true character in Canadians. We feel that passion for the Olympics will transfer to the Games in Vancouver.
This experience has really turned people’s focus to the Olympics, and you know once that puck drops or that snowboard hits the slopes, all eyes will be on the tube.
Go, Canada, go!
