Originality in the entertainment world

I love the Harry Potter and Twilight movies as much as the next person who can publically admit to indulging in such guilty pleasures.

They are staples in my movie collection, to be completely honest. However, I’m not sure if I can handle anymore book to big screen adaptations or remakes for that matter.

These days it’s as if every decent book that comes along, eventually turns into a script. It’s practically expected.

However I recently learned that one of my favourite books from childhood is being brought to life in a more refreshing way.

It was announced this week that Peter and the Starcatcher, originally a novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, will open on Broadway this spring. The story is a prequel to the beloved tale of Peter Pan.

Peter and the Starcatcher will be the first play commissioned by Disney.

Some stories are so good that we feel the need to retell them, rearrange them, and enjoy them with a different approach.

However I fear we’re reached a point where our remakes and adaptations have begun to tarnish the original stories we loved so much. Footloose anyone?

It is refreshing to see a company like Disney support things moving in an entirely different direction and taking a more artistic approach to recreating the enchantment of a novel.

I believe the world of entertainment needs a dash of pixie dust and a little spontaneity to get the magic back.
