Pete’s Perspective: Filming a Story… on Video Games

Filming a TV story on Video Games was something I found really interesting. As an avid gamer myself, I have spent countless hours on the Playstation and Xbox playing anything from racing games, to shooters and role-playing games.

The eSports industry was something I was aware of going in, but I knew that a good story could introduce a lot of people to it for the first time.

The one thing that really surprised me, however, is just how big the landscape really is. eSports is almost a billion-dollar industry already, despite only taking off just a couple of years ago.

The growth of eSports has been nothing short of exponential. Looking up statistics for my infographic made me realize just how huge it already is and how much potential it has for further growth.

Using video game footage for my story was something I knew would be easy to attract viewers. The sound up at the beginning of the story was a slam dunk, as there are always so many things going on in these games at once.

The fast movement, bright colours and unreal landscapes made sure this would be a visually attracting piece. The next challenge for me was to make my content and tell my story in a way that would not detract from that.

I was fortunate enough to have a connection with two students in our School of Media that lived together and played on the same eSports team.

They were very welcoming and allowed me to come into their home twice to disturb them and take video of them playing.

I found their setup to be very unique, playing back-to-back usually while in the same game, but they explained that is how most teams practice.

We had some great in-depth conversation about eSports, since I do have a small background with it.

The challenge for me was to find a way to introduce the sport to people that have never heard of it and explain it in a way that was clear and concise enough to fit inside a hard news TV story.

I also had to retain a timeliness element and with the release of the new Call of Duty game coming this Friday I thought now is as good of a time as ever to run this story.

In hindsight, I realized that I could have done this story as a feature and allowed myself a little more time to tell the story of Cole and Devin and the sport as a whole.

However I feel pretty confident that this news story will pique the interest of many viewers, and perhaps get them to do some research of their own.
