In his fifth of 12 straight performances across Canada, pianist Frank Horvat failed to disappoint at the Lethbridge Public Library on Sept. 28.
Noting non-music related events as inspiration for his pieces, Horvat performed in a dimly lit theater gallery, promoting not only his works, but the need for energy sustainability.
Horvat performs as part of the Green Keys Tour in which free concerts are done in a dark room as a means of saving energy.
Horvat is a classically trained pianist and interestingly uses world events and youtube videos as a source of composing works.
He played a piece entitled “ZeeZoo Snaps” where he used the infamous soccer
incident in which France player Zinedine Zidane head-butted an opponent during a game. He used the incident to create a piece of music that showed how we can say or do really stupid things and then regret it right after.
Horvat also mentioned a time in his life where he saw a commercial of celebrities snapping their fingers every three seconds.
The essence of the commercial was to show viewers every three seconds a child dies of poverty. He used this commercial as motivation for his piece entitled “poverty” where he uses a simple beat to describe such a horrific thing.
He cited improvisation as the purest form of musicality and encouraged the audience to shout out four different piano notes and once they did, improvised a song based around those four notes.
