Pink t-shirts spread anti-bullying awareness

The Boys and Girls Club of Lethbridge is doing its part along with the rest of Canada to prevent bullying in all different age groups.

Pink T-shirt day has been circulating around Canada since 2007, when some seniors in high school took initiative to stand up for a Grade 9 boy they barely knew.

The young boy was bullied on a daily basis. Seniors David Shepherd and Travis Price thought this to be unfair and cruel. They took the roles as leaders in organizing the first unofficial Pink T-shirt Day at their Nova Scotia high school though they hadn’t realized it at the time.

To stand up to the bullies, Shepherd and Price went to a local second-hand clothing store and stocked up on pink shirts. They were then distributed to the school’s population the next morning.

This began the biggest Canadian wide anti-bullying campaign and is now being done in the United States and Australia.

Here in Lethbridge the Boys and Girls Club has teamed up with the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization for Annual Pink Shirt day on Feb. 23.

Their goal is to make sure everyone has the knowledge needed to completely eliminate bullying of any type from the lives of everyone at any age and to commit to a “bully free life”, according to their website.

To get your own “Bullying Stops Here” pink shirt, you can go either Canadian

Tire locations, London Drugs or Save-On-Foods.

Everyone who attends the event at the SCO gets to enjoy bully-free learning sessions and a free barbecue.
