Play safe, stay sexy

It may seem like events such as Sexy Bingo are all fun and games, although they add a sexual health awareness aspect to them.

Lethbridge College Students Association partnered with a key community group in a bid to keep its students healthy and safe.

The LCSA and HIV Connection Lethbridge hope to erase taboos around sexual activities for college students, co-hosting the Sept. 26 event, which was aimed at dispelling the myths and misconceptions about student’s sexual practices.

The LCSA hosted its third Sexy Bingo event with a bigger turnout than ever before. Students gathered around bingo cards trying to win a variety of sexual prizes.

Lethbridge College students were invited to the cave to participate in Sexy Bingo, a night set up like a regular bingo hall, but a little sexier.

Free condoms were handed out by the HIV Connection Lethbridge, who were also available to answer any student questions. Outreach worker for HIV Connection, Madison Holtner said many students have questions but are afraid to ask.

“Because people have put so much taboo on it, like it’s not something we talk about… there are options out there and that they can talk to people about it… it’s not a big deal and there are people doing it,” said Holtner.

Between each bingo round, students were selected to participate in mini challenges for more prizes, with the focus of the night being safe sex among college students.

LCSA events and communications coordinator, Tanner Marcer, said Sexy Bingo is a fun and quirky way of promoting and talking about safe sex.

“It happens, and you can’t hide from it your entire life…you might as well acknowledge it and try to tell people to do it safely,” said Marcer.

The LCSA increased the amount of prizes for girls and guys this year because the event’s growing popularity. The cave was packed with students, and organizers scrambled to print more bingo cards before the games had started.

Organizers say they will be more prepared for the crowd when they bring the event back in following years.
