With the first papal visit to the UK since 1982, Pope Benedict XVI appears to have accomplished what he set out to do.
“He wanted to address those individuals who were sexually abused,” said Rev. Tim Boyle of All Saints Roman Catholic Parish.
“He repeated his intention to put into place better recording mechanisms and other accountability programs to deal with that problem.”
In a press release from the Vatican, the Pope “was moved by what they had to say and expressed his deep sorrow and shame over what victims and their families had suffered. “
One of Benedict’s other goals was to take another step in Cardinal John Henry
Newman becoming a saint.
Hailing from Britain, Cardinal Newman was a “very important theologian whose writings continue to influence the church,” said Boyle.
Newman’s beatification by Pope Benedict was significant because it was the first time a beatification occurred away from Rome.
