Thirteen games, one national champion.

The BMO CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship proved through three days of action that prior successes and results didn’t dictate who would emerge victorious.

Fourth-seeded College de Sainte-Foy Dynamiques won the tournament, beating provincial rival Dawson College Blues 86-56 in the gold-medal game. The victory gave the Dynamiques their fourth CCAA title in the school’s history. The teams battled earlier in the year at the RCQA final, with the Blues taking the win.

The Dynamiques’ domination of the tournament won over the regular season domination of the Grant MacEwan Griffins, who were seeded first going into the tournament.

Sainte-Foy handed the Griffins their first loss of the year in an exciting Friday night semi-final game. Grant MacEwan ended up out of the medals, losing the bronze medal game to the St. Thomas Tommies.

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks had to wait until their final game to get a victory, but did so in a dominating fashion. They won against the Seneca Sting 69-47.

The tournament MVP went to Sarah-Jane Marois of the Sainte-Foy Dynamiques. A well-deserved reward, as Marois was instrumental in their win over Grant MacEwan and had an incredible 25-point performance in the final.

Athletes chosen for first-team All Stars were Dynamiques’ Gabrielle Girard and Geneviève Derome, the Blues’ Marilyse Roy, Griffin’s Jessilyn Fairbanks and Tommies’ Ashley Brown.
As well as the action on the court, spectators were entertained by half-time performances from local dancers and live video of interviews and behind-the-scenes coverage.
