Satisfaction at long last

Ever since Invincible left fans waiting two years between its first and second seasons, the team promised to release new seasons at a faster pace. Season three is proof of that promise. Fans waited roughly two and a half years for Season two. In contrast, the gap between Season two’s conclusion in April 2024 and season three’s premiere in February 2025 was only 10 months.

While the shorter wait is definitely an improvement, some fans worry the animation team is cutting corners to meet deadlines. Aaron Dykstra, a second-year college student in the computer information technology program, shared his concerns about the faster turnaround.

“Animation takes time as much as I’m sure they’d love to rush it for the money, however I hope they slow down and focus on their animation quality rather than trying to pump seasons out,” said Dykstra.

Although Invincible’s animation style differs from more traditional anime shows, it still requires time-consuming, scene-by-scene work. Writing, designing, storyboarding, voice acting, key posing and colour slapping are just a small list of what invincible animators have to do. With a fun joke in season two about how they hide animation budget cuts, people have noticed some budget cuts that looked a little too obvious, making it stick out like a sore thumb.

Invincible has already pulled off two major delays since Season one premiered in March 2021. After waiting two and a half years for season two, fans were assured that another long delay wouldn’t happen. That promise fell flat when the show took a mid-season break after episode four.

Ibukunoluwa Oni, a second-year economics and statistics student at the University of Lethbridge, is a longtime fan who followed Invincible since the comics first released. Oni  said, “All these breaks allow them to work on more episodes.” Some fans argue the constant waiting is frustrating when they’re eager for more episodes.

Since the show closely follows the comics, many assume it will run for at least eight to 10 seasons. However, series creator and co-developer Robert Kirkman has not yet confirmed how many episodes are planned.

“We would kinda follow the comic and where the breaks would be, roughly eight seasons. Could be seven, could be 10,” Kirkman mentioned in an interview in December 2024. Fans are guaranteed more Invincible for the next few years, but the exact number remains unknown.

With the intense storytelling keeping audiences hooked, fans like Oni and Dykstra hope the creators focus on quality rather than speed. Dykstra said he doesn’t want another show ruined by a bad ending. “People talk about Breaking Bad because it was good from start to finish. Game of Thrones, though.”

The Invincible comics span 144 issues, offering plenty of material for future seasons. But the show has already taken creative liberties. One major hero returned from a near-death experience—something that never happened in the comics. As Invincible goes on, the question is: will it be able to maintain its quality and momentum,

As Invincible moves forward, the question remains: Can it maintain its quality and momentum, or will the frantic production rate catch up with it? Fans can only hope.
