It’s no secret that post-secondary education is expensive. Living on a tight budget can be hard, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have any fun. Here are some easy ways to eat well, look good and have fun without breaking the bank.
School supplies
This is one area where you shouldn’t worry about style. Generic brand notebooks and binders perform the same function as their more expensive counterparts.
Textbooks are another big expense, so buy used books if you can. Check the student bulletin boards, or a classifieds website like Kijiji.
Food
You should never underestimate the value of coupons. Many local grocery stores send out weekly flyers advertising special deals, and it pays to stock up on basic items when they’re on sale.
Transportation
Nothing is more refreshing than a bike ride or brisk walk in the morning. Using manpower to get to class may cost you time, but it will save you a lot of cash.
When winter hits, organize a car pool with friends who live in your neighbourhood, or use public transportation. Transit passes are tax deductible and cost less than driving
Style
The season’s latest looks are often recycled from past decades, so it makes sense to buy recycled clothing. Because shopping at second-hand stores can be overwhelming, it helps to have pieces in mind before you start your search.
Also, keep in mind that paying to have second-hand clothing tailored to fit you is usually less expensive than buying it new
Regular hair maintenance can also be expensive, but you don’t have to go without. You can have your hair cut and/or coloured at a school by a stylist-in-training for a fraction of the salon cost
Entertainment
Most pubs have daily food and drink specials- take advantage of them. You’ll be surprised how much money this can save, and it will also push you to try new things.
Before you leave for the night, set a limit on your spending. Take cash with you and leave your cards at home to avoid the temptation of blowing your budget
If sticking to a budget on the weekend is going to cramp your style, there is one fool-proof option- stay in and study!
