Second annual Band Wars set to rock the Barn

The Lethbridge College Student Association is hosting its first major event of the semester on Feb. 3.
Band Wars will be held at the DA Electric Barn. It’s the second time they’ve hosted the event, and if last year was any indication, it will prove to be a fantastic night for fans of live music, as well as for the bands, giving out over $1,000 in prizes.

Aaron Chubb, the events and communication co-ordinator for the LCSA, says fans of all types of music will find a musical act to cheer for during the evening.

“We had lots of metal, pop, rock, and a little bit of blues last year,” Chubb said, “but no country bands yet.”
He’s confident that might change this year, as 13 or so bands have already applied by the Jan. 13 deadline. That number will be cut down to 10 for the event.

“Some consideration is based on how ready the band is for the big stage,” Chubb said.
Each band will have a 20-minute set, with a 10-minute set-up time. Although there will be a panel of judges who are involved in the local music scene, their scores will only be part of the decision-making process. The judges will be scoring on showmanship and how tight the band plays, among other things.

However, a large segment of the score comes from the reaction of the audience itself. A decibel meter will be used to measure applause, but bands will also be judged on how many people they can bring in with pre-sale tickets.
There are no real losers that night, as each band receives something for their performance. It ranges from $800 for the top band, to gift certificates and merchandise from Long & McQuade.

Pre-sale tickets are available from the Students’ Association’s office, but if you are a fan of one of the 10 bands performing, make sure to try and get a ticket from them. It will be $10 for non-students, $5 for students.
