Lethbridge College will be hosting its second annual Livestrong Day to celebrate the fight against cancer.
“The purpose of this day is to celebrate the fight and spirit of those who have or are battling cancer,” says event co-ordinator Jeff Hamilton.
On Friday, Oct. 1, the community is invited to wear yellow and participate in a walk, hard walk or cycle. Participants will meet in the college centre core at noon and no registration is required.
Last year, the Canadian Cancer Society approached Hamilton with the idea of promoting a Livestrong Day event at the college. Hamilton later found out that one of his students was beginning a battle with Cancer and felt the event needed to take place.
“Everybody knows someone who has had to fight cancer.”
Hamilton was further inspired after watching this student battle cancer and overcome it. She is now heading this year’s committee.
“It’s stories like hers, that’s what the day is for, to celebrate the successes we are having.”
“There’s positive movement in the statistics towards surviving and living through it.”
Last year 60-80 walkers and cyclists participated. Hamilton says this is a number he hopes to see increase this year.
Information leading up to the event will be posted around the college. Donations can be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society.
