Learning the basics of self-defence

Domestic violence and street assault is a huge problem within in Southern Alberta.  Being victimized in a domestic violence situation can be terrifying, not to mention physically and emotionally scarring.  What can you do if you are ever in that kind of situation?  How can you protect yourself?  Rachel Crow Spreading Wings provides some tips from and expert. 

No matter how prepared you are in life nothing can prepare you for an unexpected violent encounter.

Too many people experience physical violence of some kind in their lives. Particularly at a younger age according to Stats Canada. Statistics indicate females are particularly vulnerable. It could be domestic or simply a stranger who engages you. If it happens, what should you do?

“In any dangerous situation like anywhere so they know how to handle it and how to defend themselves.”

“You don’t want to you be weak and get beat up. And get hurt right so I think you should know how to defend yourself so to protect yourself ”

Professional marital arts instructor Brad Wall offers some tips on how to protect yourself when confronted with violence.

20 years ago he began his training as a professional fighter.  Today he owns the progressive fighting academy where he trains and instructs  MMA and Muay Thai fighting. He also  instructs kickboxing at Lethbridge College 

“I think the most important thing people need to know about self-defense is that its not all about like real fancy techquies   its bout being able to do the most brutally effisient tactic possible to get you out of trouble and basicaly walk away and save your own life. It’s goo to know some self-defense and be familiar with that. 

Wall says the eyes are most vital so if an assailant comes at you from the front you take your hands up the face run thumbs as hard you can along the eyes by flicking your hands out quick. Tuck your head in towards your chest while grabbing the back of their neck and lunge back with your leg so your pulling their head down on your head.

Then you can deliver elbow blows to the head a couple times. 

Wall says its possible to fend off an attacker from the ground. Just hook one foot around the attacker’s leg, push up and roll over.

“The most important thing someone needs to know about self defense is that’s its not a lot of fancy things. Its about knowing a few fast efficient moves that can cause the most brutal damage so that you can get away and save your own life.

Wall says that in a violent situation yourself knowing even a few simple things about defending yourself could save your life.
