The Kodiak women’s basketball team, ranked first in the nation, continued their dominating play with a sweep over Medicine Hat on the weekend, while the Kodiak men continue in their struggle to stay afloat. The women won Friday night’s road game 93-73 followed by another convincing victory on Saturday, 90-73.

alt“Medicine Hat is a very good team with different sources of scoring,” said Kodiaks head coach Ian Bennett after their second win of the weekend.

Bennett credited their success largely to a well-rounded team game and was quick to point out Anne Mercer’s dominating performances. Mercer finished Saturday’s game with 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. However, it was the Mount Royal transfer player, Paige Bowman who took player of the game honours. Bowman scored a game-high 22 points and chipped in five assists. She also noted Mercer’s contributions.

“Anne Mercer had a huge game tonight. Honestly, I think she should have won player of the game.”

Natalie Johnson drained 12 points and followed it up with seven rebounds, while Kayla Lambert was just shy of a double-double scoring 10 points and nine boards.

Bennett made it clear the team must play a defensively sound game if they want to maintain the number one seed. The Kodiaks have a record of 11-1 in the ACAC as they prepare to take on Briercrest in a pair of home games next weekend.
