Soccer Kodiaks finish strong at home

The Kodiaks soccer teams played their final league games this past weekend.

On Sunday, the women played in Calgary at Mount Royal University.

The women were unable to score against MRU, resulting in a 2-0 loss.

Marissa Mark finished the season with the player of the game award for her hard-working defence.

On Saturday, the women made everyone proud by finishing their last home game with a 2-1 win against the SAIT Trojans.

Rianne Vanderburg scored the first goal in the first half.

The women kept SAIT from scoring and came to a pass-in by SAIT’s net. Kim Shellenberg kicked the ball in from the back line by the net and scored the Kodiaks’ second and winning goal.

Ayla Scheurer received player of the game for her outstanding defence that helped the Kodiaks win.

The men finished the season with a provincial placing. On Sunday they played Mount Royal University in Calgary.

The men tied MRU 3-3.  Goals by Dillon Desjardins, Kyle Smith-Windsor and Matthew Thomson kept the Kodiaks in the game.

Smith-Windsor, as well as scoring a goal for the Kodiaks, received the final player of the game award for his outstanding play.

The men finished their last home game with a win against SAIT on Saturday.  The Kodiaks energy and “will to win” never left the entire game.

The men won 4-0 against the SAIT Trojans.

Cole Runge scored the first two goals for the Kodiaks. Runge’s first goal was an outstanding play beating several defenders, while his second goal was an open netter.

The final two goals were scored by Shaun Gilchrist. Gilchrist’s first goal was an impressive header while his second goal was a left-footed shot in front of the net, through two defenders.

Runge and Gilchrist worked together the whole game, both finishing the game with two goals and one assist each.

Runge received player of the game for his impressive play from start to finish.

The men are on their way to provincials in Edmonton this Thursday, with a third place ranking in the south division. It has been about five years since either soccer team has qualified for provincials.

If the men win provincials they will be on their way to Quebec for nationals, taking place Nov. 9-12.

The men finished the season with five wins, four losses and one tie, while the women finished with two wins and eight losses.
