Soccer Kodiaks hope for strong season finish

The Kodiak women’s soccer team had some ups and downs this past weekend.

On Sunday in Red Deer, the women lost 2-1 against Red Deer College. Kim Shellenberg scored the single goal for the Kodiaks.

Marissa Mark received the player of the game award for her superior defence.

The women’s soccer team had a turn of events at its game in Lloydminster, Oct. 15, winning its first game of the season by an impressive score of 5-2 against the Lakeland Rustlers.

Shellenberg and Stephanie Penny scored two goals each for the Kodiaks and Kirsten Steenbergen scored one.

Steenbergen took home the player of the game award for her excellent midfield game play.

The women came up short at their home game, Oct. 1, against the Medicine Hat Rattlers.

Angela Vanderburg scored the only goal of the game for the Kodiaks, in the second half.

It was a very physical game for the women’s team. They lost to the Rattlers 5-1.

Once again Shellenberg was awarded for her outstanding skills, receiving the player of the game award. Shellenberg has walked away with the player of the game award three times so far this season.

The men Kodiaks had better luck against Red Deer College. On Sunday the Kodiaks were in Red Deer and finished the game with a win.

The men won 2-1 against Red Deer College. Cole Runge scored the first goal for the Kodiaks and Shaun Gilchrist scored the game winner.
Vic Akpaloonyavor captured the player of the game award for his exceptional outside-midfield game play.

The men did not have the same results as the women in Lloydminster, losing 3-1 against the Lakeland Rustlers.
Cole Runge was the only Kodiak to score.

Joa Markotic went home with the player of the game award for his incredible defense.

The men had a rough home game against the Medicine Hat Rattlers, Oct. 1. Yellow cards were given out regularly for both teams.

Mike Coombes received his first red card of the season, which forced him not to play in the men’s next two games on Oct. 15 – 16. Josh Walker got his third yellow card of the season, which resulted in him not being able to play on Saturday.

The Kodiaks lost 3-2 against the Rattlers.

The Rattlers scored the first goal of the game, but Dillon Desjardins answered back with his second goal of the season.

Matthew Thomson scored the second goal for the Kodiaks making the score 3-2.

With about 10 minutes left in the game the Kodiaks received many goal opportunities, but could not put one more goal on the board to tie the game.

Thomson received the player of the game award for his quick feet and smart play.

The men have four wins and four losses while the women have one win and seven losses so far this season.  The Kodiaks soccer teams have two games left in the season next weekend with one home game and one away game.

The Kodiaks next home games will be this Saturday with the women playing at noon and the men at 2 p.m.
