The women’s intercollegiate university/college softball team has ended its season. This year, the team only had two players from the college.
Melissa Samson, starting pitcher, and Ellen Mills, starting first baseman, were the two college players on the fast-pitch team.
The women’s team is under Alberta Intercollegiate Women’s Fastball Association. The team is based out of the university but allows both university as well as college students to play.
The women’s fast-pitch has a short season, starting every year on the first weekend in September and ends the second weekend of October.
Generally the team plays in Alberta and Saskatchewan. However this year, the team played a game in Great Falls, Mont.
The team finished with a record of approximately 6-10.
This year, the women travelled to Regina to participate in the playoffs during the weekend of Oct.1-2. Opening the playoffs with a win against last year’s first-place team, University of Regina, the women started off strong.
The team lost the rest of their games in the playoffs by only one run each. Some highlights of the playoffs were two home runs as well as several triples and doubles.
Sue Gilchrist, assistant coach of the women’s softball team, said the Lethbridge team was the team with the most successful bunts of any team at the playoffs.
The team pitched over 20 strikeouts during the playoffs.
Overall, the women’s softball team placed fifth in conference play. It was the women’s best season in the past five years.
In this division, the girls do not play all the teams; they only play several of them.
Other teams include University of Calgary, SAIT, Grant MacEwan, University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan.
The current coaches are asking for any women interested in playing on the team next season to call them as soon as possible.
