It is that time of year again. The time where students are finishing the final semester of the school year and are looking for either a summer job or for those who graduate, a new career.
Finding a job is not easy. There are many things you have to ask yourself and take into account. Questions such as, where do I want to live, how am I going to find a job suitable for me and what do I need to have when applying for a job?
All these questions are reasonable to ask yourself because sooner or later, you will have to find those answers.
When you do not know where to start, we suggest you go to the career counsellor at your school. Lethbridge College has an area called The Works where you can book an appointment and talk to someone about where to begin searching for a job.
Ute Perkovic, employment specialist, says students should come in to The Works and talk with one of the specialists or visit the learning café in the college and on the college website. This allows you to be more involved than just applying for jobs with little direction.
The employment specialists can assist you in creating a resume as well as a cover letter that is suitable for your field of work.
Upon finding a job prospect, students should meet with potential job managers and get to know the work environment. You should seek out employers instead of having them seek you out.
If you decide to look for jobs on your own, make sure you have someone read over your resume and cover letter before sending it off. There may be places where you have misspelled words or have a weird-sounding sentence. Having another set of eyes will make it easier to spot mistakes.
Finding a job takes time and dedication so instead of waiting till the last minute, start looking now. This will definitely save you in the long run.
