Students affected by loan glitch

Some Lethbridge College students who applied for student loans for this semester may not be receiving them for a while yet.

A computer problem was revealed to be the cause of the problem for those who applied with the Alberta Ministry of Employment and Immigration.

About 200 students are currently being funded through them, but not all have been affected by the glitch.  Over 3,000 students province-wide are currently being affected.

Approximately $500,000 is owing to the college students waiting for the ‘learner benefits’ program affected by the glitch. Many students cannot expect to see their funding in as long as a six week delay.

Lethbridge College Registrar Susie Kennedy told media that she was concerned for students and that it is just one more thing to have to worry about while beginning a new semester.

Kennedy also stated that she is afraid students may lose access to their education for this semester and that food bank and bursary resources are available but limited.

The Ministry of Employment and Immigration was on campus throughout last week talking to the students, but no long-term plan was decided.
