Support your local food growers.

In light of the recent e-coli outbreaks here in Alberta and across the continent, one has to wonder how safe is our food?

There are many people across this province and country that grow food at a local level for all to enjoy. They put dedication, sweat and tears into the food they grow.

Well not really into the food, that would be gross, but into the process.

I grew up on a ranch in southern Alberta. My family grows beef, and the beef we grow is great. I know where it comes from and what the cows eat, even (some may find this cruel or mean) their names.

This to me satisfies my food production safety issues. The beef goes to the local butcher and is slaughtered and cut by local people I know.

Not everyone has this privilege but if you take the time to go to your local butcher shop, you may come to know him or her personally, and find out where your food comes from.

This is also true to your farmers market; there are many folks around here that grow great produce. The support of local food growers, not only supports local people, but also limits the emissions it takes to get food on your plate.

As students I understand the hesitation to use local produce or meats, as they have a somewhat more expensive price tag. But remember, not only are you supporting locals who depend on this business, but you are also helping yourself by securing a safe food supply.

So the next time you try one of my recipes try local grown produce, or the next time you crave a steak, go meet your local butcher.

With more on food next week, I am Robert Thomas.
