In times of disaster, local heroes come out to show the world that you can make a difference, even with something as little as hugging someone.
There is said to be 10 million victims affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and Mitchell Beazer decided he wanted to do something to help. Beazer, along with the help of friends and colleagues, started up the campaign #10millionhugs on November 13th.
The campaign #10millionhugs works by simply giving a hug to anyone around you. After you hug people, go on to the website www.10millionhugs.com and then record the number of hugs you’ve given that day by clicking on the ‘yes’ button in the middle of the page.
“It is our hope that while people are giving hugs and tracking them on our website, they might feel inclined to make a donation to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts in the Philippines,” said Beazer about raising money for this campaign.
Besides the number of hugs given that day, there is a total amount of money raised by #10millionhugs. When you click to donate, you are taken to the Red Cross donation page where you can then give to the Philippines. #10millionhugs itself does not profit from any monetary donation given and the tracker on the website is just to keep everyone updated on how much has been donated.
There are two main goals, giving 10 million hugs and raising $100,000, which Beazer is in hopes of reaching by Christmas if possible. Raising money will be ending on December 25th but the hugs won’t stop until they reach 10 million hugs.
“Join with us in helping those in need – one hug at a time!” said Beazer.
