One thing Lethbridge is famous for is being the birthplace of Old Style Pilsner beer. It’s become a working-class favourite, and played a huge role in the plot of Michael Dowse’s 2002 mockumentary, FUBAR.
Many bars in Lethbridge offer Pilsner on tap, including The Stone. So, it’s fitting that FUBAR’s Dean ‘the Deaner’ Murdoch and his band Night Seeker will be playing there on Oct. 24.
“We’ve been on tour for about 8 days,” said Murdoch. “The best experience is right before the end of the show, when the crowd is super f*****, and they start chugging their beers, and we start chugging our beers, and we come together in sort of a beer chugging unison.”
The Deaner says his music is influenced by Iron Maiden, early Black Sabbath, AC/DC (the Bon Scott years) and Van Halen.
Night Seeker has been playing together for about six months, but Murdoch says the real test of your band’s success is to take it on the road.
“Once you get about nine or ten tunes together, just f****** get out there on the road and just start playing, cause it’s really the best way to get your chops together.
“Like for example, if you’ve got a really good band for like two or three years and you’ve never toured, then you realize that you hate their f****** guts and you can’t stand being on tour with them, then you’ve wasted all that time.”
Opening for Night Seeker is hard rock band Monster Truck from Hamilton, Ont. And good thing there’s an opener, because the Deaner says he has to be careful how long he plays his prized bass guitar.
“The thing about the Warlock, it’s a really really evil bass. I can only play it for like an hour at a time, or I start to get evil feelings, and start to do like really evil things.
“I can’t really do more than like one song or two songs for encore, or the bass will get to me and maybe kill somebody.”
Murdoch says he’s looking forward to playing in Lethbridge, a city he’s had good times in before.
“The last time I was in Lethbridge, I don’t know what the name of the bar was, but they had (pause) it came in like a giant plastic cup, and there was six shooters in there, and it was rye and coke, and it was six bucks. Super sweet deal.”
The show at The Stone starts at 9 p.m. and will also feature live movie commentary from the Deaner on FUBAR 2.
