The decline of student mental health

With the stress of school at an all-time high towards the end of semester mental health within students can see a sudden decline.

A survey done by Macleans.ca says that a quarter of college aged Canadians will experience mental health problems and that 51 per cent of students within Alberta admitted to feeling hopeless and overwhelmed with anxiety.

Lethbridge College however is taking active measures to help provide both awareness of such mental health issues; as well as provide systems to help those going through these emotions.

Vice President of Student Life Jesskia Guse has created an event with the LCSA called wellness Wednesday’s. This is where students are encouraged to take active measures in their own mental health through participating in free breakfasts.

“We offer breakfast because that’s a key part of mental health. If you start your day off right then there’s proven effects of the good ways that can help with your own mental health.” Says Guse

The LCSA are not the only one’s at the college however that are taking action.

The health services are also making an effort in offering their own measures of support to students.

“We have made help available to all students who feel like they are struggling, through counseling and special programs here at the health Centre.” Health manager Bekki tag says.

With final exams being a main factor in the well being of many students, Tag says that’s it’s imperative for students to be aware of these services.
