The Editor

I am currently the editor at the Endeavour. There are six of us in the print journalism program and we each will have a chance to be editor. It is such a great learning experience. As editor I have to make decisions that I wouldn’t have thought about before.

I am the boss. Mrs. Endeavour, married to the newspaper. I run the show. Just kidding, kind of.

I decide what runs and doesn’t run in the paper. So far that part has not been very difficult.

There are some questions I get from the writers and I’ll sit there maybe with a look on my face that shows that I have no idea what they’re asking and then thankfully, someone else who knows will jump in and save me.

Everyone here works together.

For the issue that just came out, I did not really feel stressed. I brought brownies on production day so everyone would work faster; sugar high. Everyone ended up working pretty fast, but the brownies didn’t get eaten ‘til the very end. Either way, successful!

I have to figure out what the biggest stories for the issue are so they can be podcasted and broadcasted.

I have to attend a couple of pretty straightforward meetings involving the advertising team and editorial team.

Monday mornings I look at the stories there are and calculate how much space they take up and then I proceed to create the dummy, or the layout for that week’s issue.

Let me tell ya, that dummy doesn’t always tell the truth. That’s when it comes to production day and stories or pictures get cut and things get rearranged because the dummy had lied about the measurements.

Of course, a lot of this is made easier with my – might I say – incredible assistant editor Jody Cmoc. She does most of these things with me.

I enjoy the responsibility of being editor because it has made me realize how much less involved I was just being a writer. The paper now feels more like a son to me now rather than a distant relative.

Last night, Tuesday, I was at work when someone came to me and said, “Isn’t this your paper?” She was holding the new issue of the Endeavour, which was out earlier than expected. I looked at it, maybe stroked it a little and waved it in the air. It was an exciting moment!

I opened it to page four and saw my name shining gloriously with the title editor above it. That lasted for only a second but nevertheless I was and am excited about this issue despite the couple of mistakes there are but that happens right.

Now, it’s time for the next issue.
