Story by Stephanie Savage
As the first day of action wrapped up on the Cora Breakfast and Lunch 2018 ACAC Championships, the host, Lethbridge College Kodiaks took the court. The rambunctious home crowd filled the stands but were ultimately left disappointed as the Kodiaks fell prey to the Concordia Thunder.
After a series of back and forth leaders, the buzzer sounded on the first quarter with the Kodiaks leading by four.
Despite the early lead, the Kodiaks couldn’t stop the Thunder from running up the number on the scoreboard. The Thunder claimed the lead late in the second quarter, forcing the Kodiaks to play catch-up the rest of the game.
The Kodiaks saw success early in the third quarter, scooping eight straight points, helping them to trail by only one point. The Thunder answered back by extending their lead, eventually pushing the Kodiaks into the double digit deficit which plagued them the rest of the contest.
The Thunder claimed ultimate victory with a score of 96-80.
Keanu Funa led the Kodiaks with a game high 23 points but ultimately is was fifth year Colten Murray’s contributions of eight rebounds, and 15 points that claimed player of the game.
Brett Jakubec led the Thunder with 21 points, and was awarded with ACAC player of the game honours.
The Thunder move on to the ACAC semifinals where they will take on the Lakeland Rustlers. The Kodiaks move into the consolation bracket and will face their arch-rivals from Medicine Hat College.
