The White House just got a lot whiter

column-header

We all know there’s no avoiding hearing about it, no matter how painful it may be, so I’m warning you now that this column is about the American Election.

From the very beginning, the thought of the words ‘President Donald Trump’ were hilarious and only slightly terrifying and on the flip side, the sound of having a Clinton in office wasn’t the worst thing in the world.

But as things got closer and closer to Nov. 9, those two options starting to sound scarier and scarier.

I’ll start off with the democratic nominee, Hilary Clinton.

To begin with, the thought of another Clinton in office seemed like a great idea. I was totally on board with the first woman president and having someone who’s been fighting their whole life for what they believe in, especially when she’s married to a former president.

But as time went on and we heard about e-mail scams and lies to the FBI (which is kind of a big deal), the less I trusted her and I think it’s safe to say that America agreed.

I think the thing that lost the election for Clinton in the end was the latest e-mail scandal, coming only a week before the votes were counted.

As for the president-elect, Donald Trump, I still have a hard time believing he was even a possible candidate for president, especially when I watched him first announce his plans to run for president on the Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump.

Yeah, he announced his presidency plans on a show where people brought up every horrible thing about him and made fun of him for two hours.

I was even more stunned when he became the Republican nominee over guys like Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush, people who have worked in government before and have legitimate qualifications to be president.

Then, we get to all the amazingly off-side and weird things he managed to say during his campaign – everything from bragging about how ‘stupid rich’ he is to  calling out whole religious faiths, and talking about his favourite place to grab women, found in a video.

The fact that a crude, racist, egotistical, sociopathic, sexist man managed to get into office seems so absurd to me, especially after a man like Barack Obama just served two terms.

But if I take a moment to think about it, it makes sense in a way.

Americans had an overwhelming desire for change. They wanted a leader that speaks their mind, and isn’t willing to conform to traditional political crap.

It’s unfortunate that it takes a man like I just described, but that’s the option they had.

I honestly believe this election came down to who would screw up last and unfortunately for Hilary Clinton, she was the one who dropped the ball last with her last e-mail scandal.

No matter where you stand politically, you can’t deny that we are going to pay attention to whatever comes out of a presidency that the Simpsons predicted over 16 years ago.
